An amber weather warning for wind has been issued for Storm Austen, with potentially damaging gusts and huge waves forecast to hit Newquay on Friday morning.
The Met Office has upgraded its warning ahead of the storm, which could bring significant disruption to Cornwall.
Kernow Weather Team (KWT) says the latest forecasts suggest wind gusts of between 50 and 85mph in Newquay, with the strongest winds expected from around 4am on Friday (23 October).
Exposed coastal locations are expected to experience the worst conditions.
Forecasters are also warning of potentially huge waves, with heights of between 18 and 25 feet possible along the Newquay coastline.
Conditions could become extremely dangerous around beaches, harbour walls and exposed headlands, with people urged to stay away from the coastline during the worst of the storm.
Heavy rain is also expected at times, adding to the risk of disruption.
There are concerns about fallen trees, flying debris, travel disruption and possible power cuts.
Dave Clark, from Kernow Weather Team, said the organisation had been monitoring the developing storm for several days.
He said: "And I must admit, I'm glad we started issuing our own KWT weather watches several days ago! Sometimes those late nights watching weather models really do pay off!"
He added: "We'll continue monitoring Storm Austen closely, as the exact wind speeds and wave heights could still change."
The strongest winds are expected to gradually ease later on Friday, although conditions are likely to remain blustery.
Residents are being advised to secure loose outdoor items, take extra care when travelling and avoid exposed coastal areas.
Forecasts may change as the storm approaches.
