The RSPCA Cornwall Branch is encouraging people to consider whether working dog breeds such as Border Collies are suited to their lifestyle before adopting.
The charity, based near St Columb Major, has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the needs of breeds like Collies, which require high levels of exercise and mental stimulation.
It follows the case of Bonnie, a one-year-old Collie who became so anxious in her previous home that she injured her tail, which later had to be amputated. She is now recovering in RSPCA care and looking for a new home with people who understand the breed’s needs.
Leanne Bawden, Community and Fundraising Manager at RSPCA Cornwall, said Collies “are loyal, clever and incredible companions – but they need time, patience and stimulation to truly flourish.”
The campaign aims to raise awareness about the physical and mental requirements of working breeds, which the charity says can develop anxiety or behavioural problems if their needs are not met.
More information about Bonnie and the campaign can be found on the RSPCA Cornwall website.
