A familiar sight returns to Newquay's coastline this weekend as RNLI lifeguards begin full-time patrols for the Easter school holidays.
Among the beaches covered across the South West are Crantock, Fistral, Towan, Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth. The start of the season follows several weeks of intensive training for the lifeguards, who are now ready to provide safety cover through the busy spring period.
Earlier this week, the RNLI revealed that its teams across the South West saved 80 lives in the last year. Latest figures show that in 2024, lifeguards responded to 6,892 incidents, assisted 9,178 people and saved 43 lives. Volunteer lifeboat crews launched 1,475 times, saving 39 lives and spending more than 10,000 hours at sea.
Guy Botterill, RNLI Regional Lifeguard Lead for the South West, said:
"Over the last few weeks, our lifeguards have been working hard in their training and inductions to prepare for the new season. They are excited to be back on the beaches doing what they do best - providing the highest quality lifesaving service.
“If you are heading to the coast over Easter, we strongly advise going to a lifeguarded beach. Our lifeguards are experts on local beach risks, tides and weather conditions, so please speak to them for advice.
“It’s important to remember that the water is usually at its coldest at this time of year, increasing the risk of cold water shock. Winter weather may also have changed the layout of beaches, exposing new hazards such as rip currents or rocks, so it's vital to stay aware."
The RNLI is also reminding beachgoers to follow simple safety tips:
-
Check your vessel or water sports equipment before heading out
-
Always wear a lifejacket and carry a means of calling for help
-
Choose a lifeguarded beach and swim between the red and yellow flags
-
Be aware of the weather forecast, tide times, and local safety signs
-
Supervise children at all times, both in the water and on the shore
-
If you fall into water unexpectedly: Float to Live. Lean back, spread your arms and legs, and float
-
In an emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard
Meanwhile, the RNLI has reopened its interactive visitor centre at Fistral Beach. Staffed by volunteers, the Lifeguard Hut experience offers an educational insight into coastal safety and is open daily until October.
