The current one will be retired after representing the society for almost 100 years.
The group are hoping to raise £1,400 via a crowdfounder, which would be used to commission a new banner which would be suitable for all weather whilst remaining true to the original design.
Newquay Old Cornwall Society say the current one is now showing its age after being used for almost a century, but as a “treasured piece of local heritage” it will be preserved for future generations.
The new banner would be carried at Cornish ceremonies, festivals and other events.
Their committee and members have agreed the new banner should remain faithful to the original design, meaning it would also include the historic wording in Unified Cornish. They say this will ensure it remains recognisable as the successor to the original, whilst allowing the historic banner itself to be retired.
As the group want a professionally made historic banner, they say it’s a significant investment for a voluntary heritage organisation, which is why they’ve launched the fundraising appeal.
They say they’d be grateful for any support, whether you’ve been involved with Newquay Old Cornwall Society for many years, have an interest in Newquay's history, love Cornwall's heritage and language, or simply want to support a local community organisation.
