Legal graffiti wall project to support artists and help cut vandalism

A new legal graffiti wall has been launched in Newquay in a bid to support artists and reduce vandalism in the town.

The space, in Trenance, is being overseen by Your Art Connect CIC and is designed to give people of all ages a place to create street art in a safe and supervised environment.

The organisation says the wall aims to encourage creative freedom, support young artists and help tackle illegal graffiti by providing a dedicated place to paint.

Director Marie Hutchinson Ralph said the initiative was developed in response to concerns from the local community.

She said: "We wanted to try and tackle the issue the local community is having with graffiti and tag crime on buildings and billboards.

"I think a lot of people misunderstand the graffiti culture and a lot of people love the big murals around town, but every single one of those big mural artists admit they started with tag and graffiti.

"You've got to practise but it's about getting people into practising in the right places."

Artists must book a supervised session to use the wall. Sessions are free, although donations are welcomed to help maintain the space and provide materials, particularly for young people.

The group says supervision is particularly important for younger participants to ensure they have the correct protective equipment, while also offering adults a legal space to create artwork.

A plaque at the site will provide further information and contact details.

The project has been supported through funding from the National Lottery, Boardmasters Festival and money from proceeds of crime via Devon and Cornwall Police as part of a wider initiative called From Graffiti to Gallery.

As part of that project, two upcoming spray days are planned in Bodmin and Newquay, where artists will be able to learn from experienced street artists.

Your Art Connect says the Trenance wall is "just the beginning" of efforts to build a positive street art culture in Newquay.
