The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for wind across parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, as Storm Goretti approaches.
The warning is in force from 5pm on Thursday until just before midnight, with forecasters warning of a short but potentially damaging spell of very strong north-westerly winds. Exposed coastal areas, higher ground and the Isles of Scilly are expected to be worst affected.
According to the Kernow Weather Team, peak gusts of 80 to 90 miles per hour are likely in exposed locations, with the potential for gusts of over 100 miles per hour in a small number of very exposed spots. Forecaster Dave Clark says the strength of the winds will depend on the exact track of the low-pressure system, with impacts increasing if it tracks further north.
The amber warning comes alongside an existing yellow warning, reinforcing concerns that Storm Goretti could bring multiple impacts rather than just a brief windy period. There is a risk of disruption to travel, damage to property and difficult driving conditions, particularly on exposed routes.
Drivers are being urged to take extra care, especially those in high-sided vehicles, and to expect sudden gusts near bridges, headlands and open stretches of road. Residents are also advised to secure loose items such as bins, garden furniture and trampolines.
Kernow Weather Team says the system is being monitored closely and further updates will be issued as timings and wind strength become clearer.
