New weather warnings for Cornwall as Storm Éowyn approaches

The Met Office has issued two more weather warnings for Cornwall ahead of Storm Éowyn.

A yellow warning for strong and gusty winds will come into effect on Thursday morning. This is in addition to a warning for Friday initially released by the Exeter-based Met Office yesterday.

A new rain warning has also been issued for Friday, valid from midnight until 9 am. The Met Office says: "A band of heavy rain will move northeast across this area later on Thursday night, clearing to the east on Friday morning. Accumulations of 15-25 mm are expected fairly widely, with as much as 40-60 mm over high ground, which may result in some surface water flooding in places."

Kernow Weather Team say that wind speeds will escalate on Thursday, with a 4-5 hour period of very strong and gusty winds expected. Forecasts suggest wind speeds will reach 50-60 mph, particularly over exposed coasts and hilly areas, with gusts along the coastline potentially exceeding 70 mph.

Conditions are expected to worsen further on Thursday night as Cornwall braces for Storm Éowyn’s arrival on Friday, prompting an additional yellow wind warning.

Inland areas could experience gusts of 50-60 mph, while coastal locations and higher ground may see gusts of 60-70 mph. Kernow Weather Team warn that wind speeds along the north Cornwall coast could exceed 90 mph in exposed areas, posing significant risks to safety and property.

Dave Clark from Kernow Weather Team said: "This marks the third weather warning we’ve received recently, highlighting the persistent and challenging weather conditions we are facing."
