Hotel Victoria in Newquay to reopen with new name

Newquay’s Hotel Victoria is set to reopen this summer under a new name following a change in ownership.

The NICI Group has announced plans to open THE NICI Newquay in summer 2026, transforming the historic site into an 82-bedroom hotel.

The company says the redevelopment will restore and reimagine the building as a contemporary coastal hotel, while retaining original features including the Victorian bathing lift, which connects the property to the cove below.

Founder Nicolas Roach said the design aims to reflect Newquay’s coastal setting alongside influences from the Italian Riviera.

He said: “Newquay has its own rhythm - surf culture, great beaches, that constant movement between the sea and the town - and we wanted to reflect that.

“The influence of the Italian coast adds a layer of style and escapism, but the foundation is still very much Newquay.”

The hotel will include sea-facing rooms, restaurants, a spa, gym and a redesigned clifftop pool area. Plans also include a private cinema, family facilities and a programme of events.

The company says the development is intended to create a year-round destination for visitors and the local community.

Earlier this year, a planning application was submitted to Cornwall Council seeking permission to remove later additions at the site.

The proposals include refurbishing and extending the main hotel building, alongside demolishing a number of neighbouring properties, including the Griffin Inn, Señor Dick’s Mexican Restaurant, a residential dwelling to the north-west of the hotel and 1 Cliff Road.

In their place, plans propose the construction of 81 apartments and a commercial unit at ground level.

The application has not yet been decided.
