Final Skybus flight from Newquay to Gatwick as subsidised route ends early

The final Skybus flight between Newquay and London Gatwick is due to take off tonight, marking the end of the publicly subsidised service.

The route has been operating under a Public Service Obligation (PSO), jointly funded by the government and Cornwall Council, and had been scheduled to run until 31 May.

However, the airline confirmed the service would end early, citing rising fuel costs and a drop in passenger demand. Managing director Jonathan Hinkles said the increase in fuel prices and reduced bookings had made the route no longer viable, and also raised environmental and economic concerns about continuing the flights.

Passengers affected by cancellations are being offered full refunds.

Skybus began operating the route in November on a short-term contract after previous operator Eastern Airways faced financial difficulties.

Alternative services are set to continue, with Ryanair operating flights to London Stanstead. easyJet is also due to launch a new twice-weekly service between Newquay and Gatwick from 23 June, aimed at improving regional connectivity and supporting Cornwall’s visitor economy.
