The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain from 22:00 on Thursday until 12:00 on Friday.
Forecasters say heavy showers are expected to move across the region, with some merging into longer spells of rain, particularly near the coasts.
Dave Clarke from Kernow Weather Team said: “While not everyone will be affected, where the showers do hit, we could see 10–20mm of rain in less than an hour. In areas where the heavy showers stick around a bit longer, 50–70mm of rain in a few hours is possible, so some localised flooding could occur. Occasionally, some of these showers might even come with a rumble of thunder, particularly near exposed coastal spots.”
The downpours are expected to bring difficult conditions on the roads, with reduced visibility and surface water possible. Residents in flood-prone areas are being advised to check drains and take extra care.
The warning covers Cornwall and other parts of the South West.
