A key road in Newquay will remain closed while engineers work to repair a damaged gas pipe.
Wales & West Utilities were called to Treloggan Road and Treninnick Hill on Thursday following reports of a gas leak. The leak is believed to have happened while Openreach were carrying out planned installation work in the area. The scheduled six-hour Openreach closure overran, leading to significant traffic disruption. Wales & West has since taken over the site and say the repair is “complex” and will take time to complete. Richard Marks, Gas Emergency Service Manager for Newquay, said: He added: "This is a complex job and we do not yet know how long this work will take. Our engineers are working as safely and as quickly as possible. Once we are done, we will hand the road closure back over to Openreach so they can complete their work.” Wales & West has thanked the public for their patience while the emergency repair is carried out.
“When we arrived, we found that Openreach, who were working in the area, had damaged a gas pipe running beneath the road, causing it to leak. Openreach had already closed Treninnick Hill to carry out their work, and so to keep our colleagues and other road users safe, we will need to keep the road closure in place while we work to fix the leak."
An Openreach spokesperson said: “Our engineers have completed repairs, after our duct was damaged by a gas pipe.”
