The National Education Union says it is "hopeful that a resolution can be found" ahead of a planned walkout by teachers at Newquay Tretherras this month.
Teachers will strike for two days on Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th February after members voted overwhelmingly in favour of action.
The dispute centres on workload at the secondary school.
The union says that since the appointment of a new CEO to the Cornwall Education Learning Trust in January, there has been an improved atmosphere at the school and constructive talks. However, it warns that there has not yet been enough progress to avert the strikes.
Ian Williams, NEU Branch Secretary, said: “The affiliative and cooperative approach from the Trust has allowed us to pause the first strike day that was due on 12th February. However, there now needs to be serious detail and clear, unambiguous promises around the demands that the teachers have voted for.”
The teachers are demanding:
- A decrease in the excess workload they are required to do
- Recompense for the excess workload already done
- Agreed health and safety policies
The union claims that "by directing teachers to have this excess workload, CELT is breaking their contractual obligations set out in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2024."
The NEU described the recent change in leadership of the Trust and its inclusive approach as "positive."
Radio Newquay has contacted CELT for comment.
