The Post Office has confirmed that the Central Square Post Office in Newquay will be closing in January.
The closure follows reports that the postmaster is stepping down as competition from other services increases.
A spokesperson for the Post Office said in a statement: “Regrettably, Central Square Post Office is closing on Wednesday, 22 January, at 4.30pm due to the resignation of the postmaster.” The vacancy is currently advertised on the runapostoffice.co.uk website, and they “welcome interest from retailers.”
In an update on the future of the main East Street branch, they say that under its five-year "Transformation Plan," the Post Office says it is considering the future of its "loss-making" Directly Managed Branches (DMBs). Radio Newquay understands that a range of initiatives is being explored to boost revenue, drive efficiency, and reduce costs, but “no decisions have been made on any DMBs.”
A spokesperson said:
“We are inviting expressions of interest to operate Post Offices in all remaining DMB locations, including Newquay, to gauge market interest and explore whether franchising could be a viable option. We will review all responses, sharing the results with relevant trade unions and other stakeholders.
“We want to ensure that we make the best decisions for the future of each of our DMBs, helping to strengthen the network for the benefit of customers and postmasters.”
