Singer James Morrison is supporting a much-loved Newquay charity event which returns this month.
The Joe Way Paddle for Life takes place on Thursday 26 June, after a break of five years. The event was set up in memory of local boy Joe Way, who was born with a rare genetic condition called Angelman’s Syndrome and died on 7 May 2008 aged four.
After Joe passed away, Newquay lifeguards held the first Joe Way memorial paddle, which started the Joe Way Paddle for Life in 2008. After 11 annual ‘Paddles’ and nearly 100 other fundraising events, the team had raised over £180,000 for more than 20 different charities. With Covid preventing the 2020 event and the Way family dealing with another serious illness, the event had not returned until now.
Singer-songwriter James Morrison and his family have been long-time supporters of the event, helping to raise tens of thousands of pounds since 2008. This year sees an online draw featuring a signed guitar and photos from James, an original Doug Hinge painting of Newquay harbour, signed canvas prints of local surf legends Ben Skinner, Tom Butler, and current UK champion Lukas Skinner - plus much more.

This year’s event brings back all the favourites, including skydivers from Cornwall Skydive flying Joe’s flag and landing on Towan Beach, live music with Lee Quinney Sings, Oll an Gwella, Amplify South West DJ sets, 400 paddlers, the RNLI beach lifeguards’ memorial paddle, along with charity and food stands.
The event takes place during the afternoon and evening of Thursday 26 June at Newquay harbour. It is organised in partnership with Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club and Surf Life Saving Cornwall, with support from local businesses, surf clubs, and charities.
