Residents in Newquay are pushing for better bus services five days into a long-term closure of Treloggan Road.
Wales and West Utilities has begun gas upgrade works on the road, with a rolling closure from Mellanvrane Lane to Polwhele Road expected to last until the end of February. The company says the project is “vital to ensuring gas continues to flow safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area.”
The Treloggan Bus Association, a residents’ group, has criticised a lack of communication, saying the closure has reduced bus services from four an hour to just one every two hours. First Bus Cornwall’s 87 route is being diverted, with temporary stops on Trevemper Road and at the former Kings Head, while the 59 service will continue to operate every two hours.
The association met this week with GoCornwall and Cornwall Council to discuss proposals including making the 59 service hourly, introducing the 93 bus to serve more stops, reinstating the 25 service, and adding a new bus shelter at Kings Head.
Efforts are also continuing behind the scenes to allow buses to safely pick up, drop off and turn at Morrisons supermarket, although negotiations with the company could take several weeks to finalise.
