A pool of water on Porth Beach in Newquay, where warning signs have been put up, is set to be drained.
Radio Newquay first reported over the weekend that signs had appeared around the water, warning of potentially high levels of bacteria.
The Environment Agency has since said it understands the warning signs were erected by Cornwall Council after wet weather caused a drop in water quality from the spring that feeds the pool.
A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said:
"Porth Beach is managed by the local authority via a private contractor. We understand that the private contractor made the decision to put up signs around this natural pool after wet weather caused the water quality of the spring feeding into the pool to deteriorate. Wet weather can lead to increased surface water runoff from roads.
We understand that the private contractor has now made the decision to drain the pool."
Cormac, which is currently working to clear excess sand from the beach, is expected to carry out the drainage.
