Residents in Nansledan have launched a petition calling for urgent action to improve safety on the new A3059, claiming the current layout and speed limit pose a serious risk to pedestrians, including young children.
A new petition highlights growing concerns about the stretch of road running through the Duchy development near Newquay, which currently has a 30mph speed limit. Campaigners say this is a significant change from the original plan, which included a 20mph limit.
According to the petition, there have already been more than ten near misses at the roundabout where the A3059 meets William Hosking Road and Quintrell Road.
One of the key concerns raised is the lack of any safe, traffic-light-controlled pedestrian crossings along the road. Campaigners say drivers often fail to indicate, creating an unpredictable and high-risk environment for those on foot.
Campaigners are calling for:
-
A 20mph speed limit throughout the A3059 as it passes through Nansledan
-
Three traffic light-controlled pedestrian crossings at key points
They argue that introducing safe, accessible crossings would allow all members of the community - including children, elderly residents, and those with disabilities - to move confidently and safely between homes, schools, parks, and shops.
Newquay MP Noah Law has written to Cornwall Council’s cabinet member for transport, Dan Rogerson, highlighting the "lack of safe pedestrian crossings" in the area. He has joined residents in calling for urgent safety measures and has urged the council to work with him on solutions.
Resident Jo Ingram is urging Cornwall Council and the Duchy of Cornwall to take immediate action before someone is seriously injured. She recently addressed town councillors - prompting members to write to Cornwall Council demanding action. PRESS PLAY to hear our conversation with Jo Ingram...
