A Newquay nightclub was evacuated in the early hours of this morning (Friday) after part of the ceiling collapsed.
The incident happened at Sailors Club on Fore Street, shortly before 4am as the venue was closing following an official Boardmasters After Party.
No injuries have been reported.
Video shared on social media shows a section of ceiling on the upper floor – known as the Winter Club – had come down, with insulation tiles and cables visibly dislodged.
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene “as a precaution” to ensure electrics were safe. Devon and Cornwall Police and South Western Ambulance Service were made aware but did not attend.
The venue’s owners, Stonegate Group, say they are working with contractors to repair the damage and will reopen “once it is fully safe to do so.” Boardmasters have said they will be cancelling Saturday's After Party and ticketholders will automatically receive a refund in 3–5 days.
A spokesperson for the Boardmasters Festival said:
“We can confirm that there was a partial ceiling collapse at Sailors, Newquay last night. The fire service swiftly attended as a precautionary measure and we are pleased to confirm that there were no injuries.
As a result, we will be cancelling Saturday’s After Party at Sailors and remain in close contact with the venue’s management to understand the cause of this incident. Anyone with tickets to Saturday's After Party will automatically receive a full refund within 3–5 working days.”
A spokesperson for Stonegate Group said:
“A section of the ceiling collapsed last night as the nightclub was closing. Thankfully, no one was injured, and all guests and team members are safe. The fire brigade attended as a precaution and confirmed the electrics were safe. We are now working with contractors to repair the damaged area. Sailors Club will reopen once it is fully safe to do so. Sailors Arms Pub is unaffected and will trade as normal. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.”
Lloyd Kirkby told Radio Newquay:
“It was my niece DJing last night at Sailors when the roof came down. Her name is Jessica Jackson AKA JDJ, an upcoming Drum and Bass DJ from Newquay. Her set was cut short after the bouncers came running to the stage and asked to stop the music due to the ceiling falling down in the club.
She was headhunted to play a set there for the Boardmasters After Party. She has only been DJing for 8 months and has already made big noises in the industry.”
