A volunteer from Newquay RNLI has been formally recognised after helping to save the life of a choking baby while off duty at a French airport.

Emma Auchnie, a member of the lifeboat crew, received a personal Commendation from the RNLI’s Medical Director following the incident, which took place at Paris Charles De Gaulle airport.

According to the citation, Emma was waiting in a queue when she heard a woman nearby shouting for help. Her baby had stopped breathing and was turning blue.

Emma quickly responded, carrying out a DRABC (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) assessment and identifying that the infant's airway was blocked. She carefully administered back blows until the baby vomited and began breathing again. She then monitored the child for a short period before handing them back to their parent, who did not speak English but was described as extremely grateful.

The RNLI said the incident occurred shortly after Emma had completed her Elementary First Aid STCW course.

The commendation read: “Your actions resulted in a life saved. Your determination and commitment to delivering excellent casualty care and saving lives at sea is recognised and truly represents the values of the RNLI.”

Emma was presented with the commendation by Gareth Horner, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Newquay, who praised her response.

He said: “The RNLI provides exceptional training, so it becomes second nature for our volunteers to react correctly in any given circumstance. The station is proud of all its volunteer crew but it’s very special when a Commendation is awarded – well done Emma.”
