Newquay’s MP has called for new pedestrian crossings in Nansledan during a debate in the House of Commons.
Noah Law echoed campaigners' demands for light-controlled crossings at the main roundabout junction of the A3059 and William Hosking Road. The debate was brought forward by fellow Labour MP Sam Rushworth, who is calling for parish and town councils to be given powers to set speed limits on roads within their areas.
Mr Law said:
“As a proud Cornish MP, I am as strong an advocate as anyone for the role of parish and town councils. They have their eyes and ears on the ground, and understand where there is the most serious need for crossings, as my honourable friend eloquently describes in his constituency.
“Does he agree that there is huge need for a crossing in Nansledan in my constituency, where the new Newquay strategic road has been built with little consideration for the flow of traffic coming into the village?”
In response, Mr Rushworth said:
“I do not know if he needs a crossing in his constituency because I am not local to that area. But I will tell honourable members who does know: his parish council and the people who live there. If that is what they are asking for, they should be listened to.”
The comments follow the launch of a petition calling for a 20mph speed limit through Nansledan along the A3059, as well as three light-controlled pedestrian crossings at key points.
Campaigners argue that safe, accessible crossings would help all members of the community, including children, elderly residents, and people with disabilities, to move confidently and safely between homes, schools, parks, and shops.
According to the petition, there have already been more than ten near misses at the roundabout where the A3059 meets William Hosking Road and Quintrell Road.
