Businesses in Newquay are coming together once again to help make Christmas brighter for local families.
The Newquay Community Christmas project, led by Jess and Laurie Gardener from L&K Travel and mortgage broker James Savage, is collecting unwrapped essentials, toys and festive treats to be given out in the days before Christmas.
The project began last year after the L&K travel team placed a Santa’s letterbox in the town, inviting people to anonymously nominate families who may need help.
Jess Gardener said: “Sometimes we find that pride gets in the way. Many people don’t want to admit they need help, no matter what their situation is.”
Laurie Gardener added: “The outpouring of support for the idea was incredible. We were absolutely inundated with presents – it really showed what Newquay is all about.”
Organisers say they hope to increase donations for older people this year, as some may be alone or unable to buy gifts for loved ones.
James Savage, who has supported Christmas donation schemes for several years, said joining forces “was a no-brainer”, adding: “It’s not about us; it’s about the act of charity and spirit of Christmas.”

The trio have organised a fundraising day on Sunday 21 December from 10-2pm at Project 83. People can donate in person while enjoying live entertainment from local artists Josh Curnow, Kello Hub and Selena Brose, who are giving their time to support the event.
There will also be a tombola with prizes donated by local businesses.
Gifts will then be available for collection at St Michael’s Church on 22 and 23 December, with support from local organisations including the Salvation Army and Newquay Foodbank.
Tables will be set out with toys, adult gifts and essential items for people to choose from and give to someone else.
