Plans to redevelop the former Sutherland Hotel on Mount Wise into a 31-unit aparthotel have been given conditional approval.
Developer Blakesley Estates Ltd previously submitted an application for a six-storey, 35-room aparthotel in 2023. That application was withdrawn in following objections over the height of the proposed building, including from Historic England and Newquay Town Council.
A revised application was lodged in November, reducing the height and scale of the development. The front-facing blocks have been lowered by two storeys to address concerns about the visual impact on nearby St Michael’s Church. The developer said consultation with stakeholders and the public led to a redesign aimed at creating “a better balance against the existing townscape of Newquay.”
Despite the changes, Newquay Town Council maintained its objection, stating that while the new design was smaller, the aparthotel “would still be too tall and would negatively impact adjacent buildings,” adding that the plans remained “one storey too high.”
Alongside the 31 serviced apartments, the proposal includes 32 parking spaces, an increase of 16 compared to what is currently available on the site.
