Sports clubs in Newquay are set to work more closely with town and county authorities to align priorities for the planning and development of sporting facilities.
A roundtable meeting was held at Newquay AFC’s Mount Wise ground on Tuesday 31 March, chaired by MP - Noah Law. The discussion brought together clubs from across the town, alongside representatives from Cornwall Council, Newquay Town Council and the Duchy of Cornwall. Talks focused on the challenges facing volunteer-led clubs, particularly access to training space and facilities, and how a more coordinated approach could help deliver long-term improvements. Organisers said a shared need for improved facilities was highlighted across multiple sports, with collaboration seen as key to addressing ongoing pressures. Mr Law said: “With the issues with Newquay’s sports facilities that multiple clubs have been facing – some for over 20 years – it was great to get the ball properly rolling on securing a strategic, long-term solution for playing pitch users across the town.” Participants said there was strong potential for closer partnership working across sport in Newquay, with support from local and regional organisations seen as key to future progress. Newquay AFC, which hosted the meeting, runs more than 20 youth teams alongside senior, women’s and veterans’ sides, and is currently playing at its highest-ever level in the English football pyramid. Al Lenton, Vice Chairman, Newquay AFC “The atmosphere here on a matchday tells you everything about this club. People come because they want to be here, and that backing is why we keep pushing: more teams, better facilities, bigger ambitions on the pitch and off it. We have built something the town can be proud of, and we were glad to make the case for what the right investment could do next.”
