Cornwall Council has launched a consultation on plans to reduce speed limits on roads in Nansledan.
Under the proposals, the existing 30mph limit along the eastern section of the Newquay Strategic Route would be cut to 20mph. The change would apply to the north-eastern arm of the road between two roundabouts, and to all residential streets in Phase 6 of the Nansledan development, south of Rialton Road.
The Council is also proposing to extend the 30mph limit on the A3059 so it covers new access roads into the estate.
The plans follow concerns raised by residents and stakeholders about traffic speeds and pedestrian safety since the Strategic Route was opened to through traffic. They add that the proposals form part of Cornwall’s wider rollout of 20mph limits, aimed at simplifying signage and improving safety for all road users.
Cornwall Council believes introducing 20mph zones will help protect vulnerable road users, support its ‘Vision Zero’ target to eliminate serious injuries on the county’s roads, and encourage more people to walk and cycle for local journeys. It also says the measures could create more liveable streets, reduce traffic impacts on community facilities, and benefit the local economy.
As part of the scheme, a separate consultation is planned in future to gather views on new pedestrian facilities along the eastern arm of the Strategic Route.
The current consultation runs until 12 September. Feedback and traffic data will then be reviewed before any final decision is made. The consultation can be found here.
