A large banner has been put up on Newquay’s Cliff Road in a bid halt plans to remove free parking bays.
The banner follows the launch of a petition signed by hundreds of people urging Cornwall Council to retain the 19 free bays. The council plans to remove them as part of wider improvements linked to the redevelopment of the railway station area, including a new £7 million cycleway.
Newquay Central and Pentire Cornwall Councillor - Joanna Kenny, who met with local businesses last week, says she wants the council administration to look again at the plans and intends to speak to the Cabinet member responsible. PRESS PLAY below to listen to Councillor Joanna Kenny.
The petition was launched by Newquay businessman Dirk Parker, who runs K2 Gym. He said the free spaces are vital for both residents and local traders, and warned that removing them would damage year round footfall in the area.
Cornwall Council says it has listened to feedback and that 74 new parking spaces will be created nearby, including 63 at the Tolcarne Coach Car Park which is set to become a pay and display site with free hours in the morning, evening and during winter. A public event to discuss the proposals will take place at the Great Western Hotel on Cliff Road on Friday 27 June from 10am to 5pm.
