A much loved community fundraiser returns to Newquay Harbour today.
The Joe Way Paddle for Life has raised over £180,000 for local and national charities since it began. The event was launched in memory of Joe Way, who was born with the rare genetic condition Angelman Syndrome. Joe overcame several life-threatening conditions, including meningitis and a severe skin reaction, before sadly passing away in 2008 at just four years old. This year’s paddle is particularly poignant, as Joe would have turned 21 in 2024. Joe’s mum Claire said the milestone had made the family reflect even more deeply. She said: “Joe would have been 21 last September, so the daily memories are magnified. With what everyone has been through over the last four years, it feels right to mark this milestone and spread some goodwill across the community.” His dad Matt added: “The last event was so good, we were nervous to go for it again. But the Lions, Surf Life Saving Cornwall, and previous supporters were all in favour - as were many new ones. It’s always been a fun community event and a great way to celebrate Joe’s short but impactful life.” The 2025 Paddle for Life begins at 4pm and promises a packed afternoon and evening of family-friendly entertainment and fundraising. Highlights include skydivers from Cornwall Skydive landing on Towan Beach with Joe’s flag, live music from Lee Quinney Sings and Oll an Gwella, DJ sets from Amplify Southwest, a memorial paddle with RNLI beach lifeguards, and around 400 paddlers taking part. Charity and food stalls will also return to the harbour. A prize draw will also be running alongside the event. James Morrison has donated a signed guitar, and Surfers Against Sewage have offered tickets to the SAS Ball in July. There are also signed canvas prints from surfers Ben Skinner, Tom Butler and Lukas Skinner, an original painting of Newquay Harbour by artist Doug Hinge, as well as football tickets, a gym membership and a meal for two donated by local business WAX.
