A fundraising event is taking place this weekend to help launch an Autumn and Winter water quality testing programme in Newquay.
Clean Sea Newquay is working with Surfers Against Sewage to begin water testing outside the Environment Agency's usual monitoring period, which runs from May to the end of September.
To support the new programme, the group is holding a Community Beach Party this Saturday (26th July) at Great Western Beach, with a full day of activities, live music and family fun. The day begins at 9am with a beach clean, organised by Cornwall Marine Group.
Organiser Lou is helping stage the event and says the aim is to raise awareness and funds to keep water testing going through the colder months, when many locals are still swimming and surfing in the sea.
The day’s line-up includes yoga, breathwork, choir performances, beach games, an awards ceremony, karaoke, live music from Edward Bois, and a community clean-up to finish. Local volunteers will be stewarding the event, and refreshments will be available at the Great Western Surf Café.
Newquay resident Allison Craggs is also supporting the campaign. She joined Clean Sea Newquay after tragically losing her rescue dog, who became ill with suspected gastroenteritis after swimming in the Gannel.
