Nansledan’s Christmas Festival gets under way this week, with a full programme of events leading up to the Christmas Lights Switch-On on Friday.
Festivities begin on Wednesday with a lantern-making drop-in workshop from 5pm to 7pm in the Christmas Marquee, where families can recycle lemonade bottles to create lanterns for Saturday’s parade. On Thursday, a wreath-making workshop will run from 5pm to 8pm in the Marquee, hosted by HOME Nansledan, with bookings taken directly by the business.
Friday’s programme includes a family Christmas card print drop-in session from 5pm to 6.30pm at the Nansledan Community Centre, organised by the Nansledan Arts Festival, followed by a children’s Christmas disco from 6pm to 8pm in the Marquee.
The Christmas Market will take place on Saturday across Kew an Lergh car park and the Community Centre, opening at 2.30pm with real log cabins and festive craft stalls. Santa’s Grotto will be open from around 2.30pm to 4pm before Santa joins the lantern parade, and food stalls will begin serving from approximately 4pm.
The Newquay Samba Band will perform in Parc Mengleudh from 5pm as people gather for the lantern parade and the tree lights switch-on. Radio Newquay will compère the event. Santa is due to arrive in his sleigh at around 5.15pm and will join the High Sheriff of Cornwall for the countdown before the parade moves via Stret Trewolek to the Market area, where Santa will be available for photos.
The festival continues on Sunday with a Christmas charity music night from 5pm in the Christmas Marquee, raising money for Cornwall Air Ambulance and the RNLI. The line-up includes The Velvet Hour at 5pm, The Palmers at 6pm, the Indian Queens Band at 7pm and St Gregory’s Band at 8pm. Entry costs £5 for adults and £3 for children, with a raffle and refreshments available.
Organisers have thanked the Duchy of Cornwall team for working in partnership with the Nansledan Community Association, along with the event’s sponsors: Newquay Lions, Newquay Towan Blystra Lions and Matt Downing of WTS Energy.
