A major Newquay road will now remain closed until Monday. The A392 between Trevemper and the Morrisons roundabout has been hit by delays, and will stay shut throughout the weekend.
The closure, for the installation of a new signalised junction, began in September and was due to be completed today. However, Cornwall Council says a "slight technical issue" with the commissioning of new traffic signals means it will remain shut over the weekend.
In September, the council’s contractor, Cormac, said the project involved creating a new signalised junction with pedestrian crossings on the A392, between the Trevemper and Treloggan roundabouts. Additional work included realigning the carriageway, installing new drainage systems and utilities, constructing kerbing, installing traffic signals and street lighting, followed by final resurfacing and road marking.
In a statement from Cornwall Council today, a spokesperson said:
"The newly aligned A392 was due to open today. However there has been a slight technical issue with the commissioning of the traffic signals. It has therefore been deemed necessary to complete the commissioning on Monday 3rd February, for safety reasons."
