Joe Way Paddle for Life celebrates 18th year at Newquay Harbour

The 18th annual Joe Way Paddle for Life has once again brought the community together at Newquay Harbour to celebrate the life and legacy of Joe Way.

Despite challenging weather conditions affecting attendance and forcing the cancellation of some planned aerial displays, organisers said the event was another success, with supporters gathering for an afternoon and evening of fundraising, entertainment and community spirit.

The event featured live performances from Lottie Brown, Tom Carr, the Newquay Rowing Club Singers and an Amplify Southwest DJ set. Visitors also enjoyed paddle heats, charity stalls, prize draws and family activities throughout the day.

Low cloud meant the planned Skydive Cornwall beach landing had to be cancelled shortly before take-off, while Cornwall Air Ambulance was also unable to carry out its scheduled flypast.

However, organisers said the weather did little to dampen the atmosphere, with attendees embracing the event's message of positivity, resilience and community.

This year's relay competition was won by Newquay Surf Life Savers, while individual winners were Esmee Gregorious, Ben Harradine and Sam Chapman.

Event organiser Matt Way said: "The weather may not have been on our side this year, but it certainly didn't put a dampener on the atmosphere or people's enthusiasm to celebrate Joe's life in such a positive way.

"Every year Claire and I are overwhelmed by the support we receive. We simply can't thank everyone enough – our volunteers, performers, sponsors, emergency services, charities, supporters and everyone who attended. There is an enormous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make this event happen and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who gives their time, energy and expertise.

"A special thank you must go to the RNLI lifeguards who started the Paddle for Life 18 years ago and have continued to support it ever since. Their commitment has helped keep Joe's legacy alive for nearly two decades."

The organisers also thanked charity partners Newquay Towan Blystra Lions Club and Surf Life Saving Cornwall, along with sponsors and local businesses who supported the event.

Although final fundraising figures are still being calculated, organisers said they were delighted with the support shown throughout the day. Since the event began, more than £188,000 has been raised for charitable causes.

The Joe Way Paddle for Life Online Prize Draw remains open until 30 June, with proceeds continuing to support charitable causes. You can buy tickets here.

The event was first organised by Joe's friends and RNLI lifeguards following his death and has grown into one of Cornwall's best-known community fundraising events.

Organisers said the Paddle for Life continues to celebrate Joe's determination, kindness and positive outlook, bringing together volunteers, emergency services, charities, businesses and families from across the community.

Final fundraising totals from this year's event are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
