An investigation is being carried out today to establish the cause of a fire in derelict buildings on Newquay’s Narrowcliff.
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene shortly after 4:20pm on Tuesday, prompting a request for nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed.
Fire appliances and an aerial ladder platform attended the scene.
The affected buildings, located between the Hotel Bristol and the old Narrowcliff Hotel, are due for redevelopment into apartments.
In an update issued at 8:45pm on Tuesday, Cornwall Fire and Rescue said breathing apparatus had been withdrawn, and the aerial ladder platform remained in place to damp down hot spots.
A spokesperson for the service said: “Breathing apparatus has now been withdrawn from this incident and an aerial ladder platform continues to damp down remaining hot spots. The incident is being scaled back with appliances preparing to leave the scene in the next 60 minutes. A fire investigation is to be carried out on Wednesday 23rd July to establish the cause of the fire.”
The Narrowcliff Surgery, which is next door, said it would only be seeing urgent appointments on Tuesday evening and asked patients to contact them to rearrange routine bookings.
