Record 150 teams compete in Crantock Bale Push

A record 150 teams took part in the 26th Crantock Bale Push, with competitors travelling from as far as Italy and Scotland.

Organisers said it was the largest number of teams in the event’s history, including 65 junior teams competing across three age categories.

The first children’s race began shortly after 5pm on Friday 11th September, using a lighter bale and with assistance from event marshals.

Newquay Hockey Club’s Chicks with Sticks won the women’s race for the 18th time, completing the course in one minute and 54 seconds.

Last year’s open champions Roll at Fat One retained their title. Kernow Strength and Conditioning finished second, narrowly ahead of Crantock Surf Life Saving Club Lads in third.

Spectators were also entertained by 1940s-style singer Andy Marshall, while stalls raised awareness and funds for organisations including Newquay Royal British Legion, Crantock Surf Life Saving Club and men’s mental health charity Man Down Cornwall.

Event spokesman Tony Brokenshire said the final fundraising total was still being calculated.

“We look forward to making donations to Man Down Cornwall, Crantock Surf Life Saving Club and other local community-based groups,” he said.

Organisers also thanked the volunteers, businesses, sponsors and members of the community who helped stage the event.

Chairman Nigel Eustice said: “We have a big team of willing helpers and could not run the event without this support.”

The weekend continued with a Roll Over Party at Halwyn, while a presentation evening will be held in October.
