Queues form at Newquay shop for solar eclipse glasses

Silver Breeze jewellers, in Bank Street, received a delivery of hundreds of pairs on Monday afternoon after experiencing high demand throughout the weekend.

Owner Kerry Lawrence told Radio Newquay on Monday afternoon that the shop was receiving calls from people across Cornwall asking about the glasses as often as every 30 seconds.

Staff served customers for three hours on Monday evening as queues continued outside.

In a statement, the shop said: “We’ve absolutely loved the vibe today - you have all been amazing.

“Thank you so much for your patience, kindness and support, and we’re sorry we couldn’t answer all of your calls today.”

The business has since launched a social media competition offering people the chance to win one of 10 pairs.

The eclipse on the evening of Wednesday 12 August is expected to provide the UK with its most significant view of a partial solar eclipse for almost 30 years.

People across the country will see the Moon pass in front of the Sun, while some parts of Europe will experience a total solar eclipse.

Cornwall and Pembrokeshire are expected to have some of the best views in the UK, with about 95% of the Sun obscured. Coverage is forecast to reach about 90% across much of the rest of the country.

People are being reminded never to look directly at the Sun without suitable eclipse viewers carrying the appropriate safety certification. Regular sunglasses do not provide adequate protection.
