Public urged to stay away from Holywell Bay cliff fall

People are being urged to stay away from a large cliff fall which has sealed off a well-known cave at Holywell Bay.

The collapse is thought to have happened overnight from Saturday into Sunday at the cave known as Holy Well, St Cubert’s Well or St Cuthbert’s Cave.

HM Coastguard Newquay said the substantial rockfall had left the area unstable and warned people to keep clear.

The natural cave was carved into the cliff by the action of the waves and was only accessible at very low tide.

Its distinctive walls featured shades of white, blue, red, green and purple, created by mineral-rich freshwater seeping through the rock. Over time, the dripping water also formed stalactites inside the cave.

HM Coastguard Newquay said: “Sadly, overnight a substantial rockfall has sealed off the cave to Holy Well on Holywell Beach.

“This area is still unstable and we advise you to stay clear of this rockfall.”

The team warned that heavy rain following a prolonged dry spell could lead to further incidents along the coast.

It added: “Keep clear of the edge whilst walking along the top of cliffs and stay clear of the bottom.”

Holywell Bay Surf Life Saving Club said it was “deeply saddened” that the well was no longer accessible.

“A massive overnight rockfall has completely devastated the area,” the club said.

“We urge you to take even more care around all cliff tops and bases. The recent rain after such a dry spell will create instability and increase the likelihood of further rockfalls.”
