Police have now identified the man whose body was found at Great Western Beach this morning.
The appeal for the public's help was issued at lunchtime after initial enquiries failed to confirm the man's identity.
In a statement, officers said they would now make efforts to locate and inform his next of kin. They also thanked everyone who shared the appeal or provided information, stating it was "significant in helping progress our enquiries."
The man, thought to be in his 40s or 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene after emergency services were called to the beach around 7:30am.
