Peppermints unbeaten run comes to an end

It was a busy weekend of local sport, with football, rugby, hockey and gig rowing all on the agenda. Newquay AFC saw their unbeaten run brought to an end, but there were victories to celebrate for St Mawgan, Newquay Hockey Club and Newquay’s young gig rowers.

Newquay AFC’s unbeaten run has come to an end after a narrow 2-1 home defeat against Bridgwater Town in the Western League.

The Peppermints found themselves two goals down inside a frantic opening eight minutes, before Callam McOnie pulled one back for the hosts.

Newquay were unable to find an equaliser as Bridgwater held on to take all three points.

The defeat came just days after an emphatic 4-0 victory over holders Penzance in the Cornwall Senior Cup.

Tuesday evening’s win at Mount Wise secured Newquay a place in the last 16 of the competition.

Elsewhere, St Mawgan continued their encouraging run of form in the South West Peninsula League with a 4-0 victory away at Hayle.

The result means St Mawgan are now unbeaten in four matches as they continue to find their feet in the league.

In the St Piran League, St Newlyn East were held to a 1-1 draw by St Teath, while Goonhavern Athletic suffered a 4-1 home defeat against Probus.

Newquay AFC Women also had to settle for a point after drawing 2-2 at home to Cornish rivals Sticker.

Hornets beaten at home

In rugby, Newquay Hornets endured a difficult afternoon as they were well beaten at home by Launceston Seconds.

The result leaves the Hornets bottom of Cornwall Counties Two after the opening two rounds of the season.

There was better news for Newquay Hockey Club, with the ladies’ first team edging a five-goal thriller against Sidmouth and Ottery to get their season up and running.

Holly Wignell, Elsie Barbery-Redd and Sam Ricketts scored the goals for Newquay, who travel to Liskeard to face Caradon this coming weekend.

Newquay win Silver Paddle

There was also success on the water as Newquay claimed victory in this year’s Juniors Silver Paddle gig race.

The home crew overcame rowers from Treffry and Dove to take the honours in front of a busy Newquay Harbour.
