Newquay cricketers enjoy winning weekend as Interclub surfing championships cancelled

We round up the weekend sport from Newquay and beyond...

Newquay Cricket Club enjoyed a successful weekend in the Cornwall Cricket League, with three of the club's four senior sides recording victories.

The first team secured a 66-run win over Luckett in County Division One at Chapel Field.

A superb century from Tom Owen, who made 128, helped Newquay reach 275 before the visitors were bowled out for 209 to seal a convincing home victory.

There was more success elsewhere in the club, with the second team beating St Neot Taverners by five wickets and the third team edging out Launceston by 10 runs.

The fourth team were unable to make it a clean sweep, losing by 142 runs to St Erme.

St Newlyn East also celebrated a home win in Division Five West.

They defeated Beacon seconds by 33 runs at Cargoll Road after posting 159 and then bowling their opponents out for 126. Oliver Bennett-Hughes was the hosts' leading scorer.

Surfing event cancelled

Meanwhile, organisers of the 2026 English Interclub Surfing Championships have announced the event has been cancelled.

The championships, which were due to mark their 40th anniversary, will not go ahead after organisers said a lack of sponsorship meant the competition was not financially viable this year.

Newquay Boardriders, who had been due to host the event, say they are now looking towards bringing the championships back in 2027.

Pre-season begins

Football also returned to Mount Wise over the weekend as Newquay AFC began their pre-season programme.

The first team were beaten 3-0 by visitors Briton Ferry Llansawel on Friday evening.

There was better news for the club's reserves, who recorded a 6-2 victory over Goonhavern, while the Veterans defeated Newquay Under-23s by four goals to two.
