Crantock Bale Push returns for 26th year

The event has become a fixture in the village calendar, combining competition and entertainment with fundraising for Cornish charities and local organisations.

This year's event will support Man Down UK alongside other local groups and organisations.

Racing begins from 5pm with the junior competitions, starting with the eight-and-under category before the 12-and-under and 16-and-under events.

The women's competition will follow, with the early races taking place over shorter distances.

420lb bale through the village

From around 7.30pm, attention turns to the Open and 180s competitions.

Teams of four will tackle the full quarter-mile course through Crantock, pushing a full-size round straw bale weighing approximately 420lb – or around 190kg – and measuring four-and-a-half feet in diameter.

The course takes competitors up and down hills through the village, starting and finishing between its two pubs.

Teams can enter on the evening, costing £10 for an adult team and £5 for a children's team. Parking is available at Crantock Village Hall.

Chairperson Nigel Eustice said the event was an "essential part of Crantock life", providing fun and competition for all ages while raising money for good causes.

He said: "The total raised by the Bale Push since 2000 now tops an incredible £191,500, which has all been donated to Cornish charities and local organisations."

There'll also be live entertainment, with 1940s crooner Andy Marshall performing during the early evening.

Later, The Old Albion and The Cornishman will host live music from Black Velvet and The Quest.

Nigel added: "Remember, you don't have to be mad to take part – but it helps!"
