Cornwall Pride Newquay postponed over forecast winds

Cornwall Pride’s outdoor event in Newquay has been postponed because of forecast wind conditions.

The celebration was due to take place at the Killacourt on Saturday, with a Pride march beginning at the Barrowfields.

Cornwall Pride chief executive Matthew Kenworthy Gomes told Radio Newquay that organisers were now looking at holding an alternative event in the town later this year.

He said the decision had been taken to protect those involved in staging and attending the event.

“It’s a community event, so for the safety of our stallholders and the event itself, we’ve had to postpone,” he said.

“We are looking at an alternative event later this year in Newquay.”

The official indoor after-party will still take place at the Rattler Beach House from 7pm until 1am.

Mr Kenworthy Gomes said Cornwall Pride had faced difficult weather during several recent visits to Newquay, including torrential rain during three previous events. Last year’s event was also cancelled.

He said he was particularly disappointed that the planned Pride dog show, which was due to return with the RSPCA, would not take place on Saturday.

Mr Kenworthy Gomes also thanked the volunteers and community organisations involved in Cornwall Pride.

“Pride is absolutely for everyone,” he said. “It’s that message of love and solidarity, and everyone has the ability to be beautifully different.”

A date for the rearranged Newquay event has not yet been announced.
