Illustrated talk by local historian & author at Grampound Village Hall looking at the story of the Americans in Cornwall during the war.

The American Presence in Cornwall Remembered

The vast American presence in Cornwall is being highlighted at an illustrated talk by local historian and author Phil Hadley this Saturday, the 27th June, in the village hall at Grampound. By May 1944 over 120,000 combat troops were stationed in Cornwall with 70,000 of them embarking for D-Day landing at Omaha and Utah beaches on June 6th 1944.

Phil’s talk illustrated with many wartime photographs and film clips from his extensive collection will show what life was like for the Americans as they prepared for that great day covering topics like their training, their entertainment, their sport, their doughnuts and following their journey from the concentration areas into the sausage camps and down to the embarkation hards There will be a special focus on the mid-Cornwall area given that the talk has been organised by the Grampound with Creed Heritage Centre.

Tickets are £5 (which includes refreshments) with proceeds going to the Heritage Centre and can be obtained from the Grampound village shop, by emailing heritage@grampound-pc.gov.uk or on the door on the day.
